Participate in local government
According to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, municipalities have influence over approximately 50% of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada. It’s time to work together and face this challenge.
Sustainable Merrickville-Wolford continues to look for ways to support and partner with the Leeds-Grenville County Council, as well as with the individual municipalities. In particular, we are committed to working with the Merrickville-Wolford Council to help them determine the best strategies to address the climate crisis within their mandate.
In preparation for the Municipal election in 2022, the Merrickville-Wolford Chamber of Commerce and Sustainable Merrickville-Wolford teamed up to invite the candidates to answer a broad set of questions, including those with a focus on the climate crisis and environmental issues. The unedited responses from the elected Mayor and Councillors (in alphabetical order) are linked to the list below.

Resources for Municipal Action
On June 7, 2022, Sustainable Merrickville-Wolford hosted an information evening on Municipal Action and the Climate Crisis. Led by local experts, Sue Brandum (co-founder of Climate Network Lanark), Bradley Wright (environmental consultant), and Michèle Andrews (cofounder of SMW and DoorNumberOne.org), the presentations focused on what municipalities like ours can and should be doing to address the current environmental and climate crisis.
